The Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (Act 736) is legislation that grants Malaysian
citizens the right to organise and participate in peaceful and unarmed
assemblies, in accordance with the principles of democracy and freedom
of expression. This Act sets out the responsibilities of organisers and
participants of assemblies, as well as the role of the police in ensuring
public safety and order.
On 13 February 2025, the government agreed to amend this Act to
facilitate the organisation of peaceful assemblies, including removal
of the requirement to obtain consent of a venue owner as stipulated in
Section 11 of Act 736, as well as notice requirement to inform the police
five days prior to an assembly.
