SUMMARY OF MINISTRIES ACTIVITIES IN MINISTRY OF FEDERAL TERRITORIES

Maiden Flight Of Malindo Air’s New Route To Labuan – An Initiative For
The Well-being Of The People Of Labuan
On 2 August 2018, YB Tuan Haji Khalid bin Abd. Samad, Federal Territory
Minister witnessed Malindo Air’s maiden flight from KLIA to Labuan. The
initiative to improve the well-being of the people of Labuan is also an effort to
make Labuan a vibrant tax-free island.
The flight addition by Malindo Air is a short-term solution by the Labuan
People's Welfare Team. Through this, more connectivity will be available to
Labuan. Currently, there are only two daily flights by Malaysia Airlines and one
daily flight by Air Asia are available to Labuan. The application for Malindo Air
flight to Labuan was settled by the Ministry of Federal Territory through the
Ministry of Transport. Flight approval by the Malaysian Aviation Commission
was obtained in May 2018. With the cooperation from the Malaysian Civil
Aviation Authority, this flight is approved on 2 August 2018 with the first flight
was due to take off on 1 July 2018. Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad also
assisted in providing technical and logistics requirements at Kuala Lumpur
International Airport and Labuan Airport to ensure safety of passengers.
As a result of the initiative action plan to improve the well-being of the people
of Labuan, frozen seafood products from Labuan can also be checked in as
baggage. Malindo Air is the only carrier that authorises such policy. People are
now able to bring high quality frozen seafood products from Labuan whenever
they feel to do so. This effort will boost the growth of Labuan's economy,
especially the frozen seafood industry, and subsequently increase the income
of local fishermen.
The Ministry of Federal Territory is also working to strengthen the tourism
sector as the main economic resource of Labuan. Through the Labuan Go
Green Programme, cultivation of various coconuts and local fruit trees has
been implemented since 2016. The initiative is aimed at making Labuan an
agro-tourism location in the next five years.
To date, 31,700 local coconut and fruit trees are planted in Labuan. The
implementation of this programme is in collaboration with Labuan Corporation,
Department of Agriculture, MARDI, MARDI Corporation and the entire Labuan
residents. In addition to enhancing the beauty of its landscape, it will also meet
the daily needs of the people of Labuan and eventually, address the issue of
the rising consumer price and cost of living.
The Ministry also hopes that the programmes implemented in Labuan will not
only positively impact government services but also serve as the main platform
for solving Labuan's economic problems. The implementation of such
initiatives can thus present economic opportunities and solve the high cost of
living in Labuan.
