The Malaysian flag has 14 stripes of equal width in red and
white, starting with the red stripe on top and ending with the
white stripe below. The stripes represent a single direction
taken by the nation and its people heading towards glory.
The 13 stripes represent the 13 states and one stripe
represents the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan
and Putrajaya.
Gemilang means to shine gloriously. It symbolises the
excellence displayed by the nation and its people in
meeting daily challenges with steadfastness, loyalty and in
unity as well as raising the image of the country locally
and overseas.
The dark blue colour on the left
symbolises the unity of its multi-
racial people, the yellow colour of
the crescent and the 14-pointed
star refers to the sovereignty of the
constitutional monarchy. The crescent
means Islam is the official religion and the
14-pointed star indicates the unity of the
13 states and federal government. The red
colour represents bravery and the white colour
represents purity, sincerity and commitment to
uphold the resilience of Malaysians.
