World Maritime Day (WMD) 2018
World Maritime Day (WMD) is an initiative by the International Maritime
Organisation (IMO) to elevate and recognise the role of relevant communities and
sectors in the maritime industry. The main objective of the WMD is to promote
cooperation between the private sector and the government, especially through
continuous engagement, exchange of ideas and information to address current
and future maritime industry challenges. This is critical in maintaining the National
Maritime Transport Policy for a sustained and strengthened contribution towards
Malaysia's sustainable growth.
The theme for the year's WMD celebration that was selected by the IMO Council
Members was “IMO 70: OUR HERITAGE - BETTER SHIPPING FOR BETTER
FUTURE". The theme corresponded with IMO's 70th anniversary in 2018.
YB Dato' Haji Kamarudin bin Jaffar, Deputy Minister of Transport officiated the
WMD on 6 August 2018, which was ateended by more than 600 participants and
guests. In his speech, the Deputy Minister stated that he believed the WMD is
important as a platform for networking and sharing experiences to shape the
global maritime future.
In conjunction with WMD celebration during the year, four awards were presented
to recipients who have made significant contribution to the maritime sector in
Malaysia.
Various activities were held throughout the World Maritime Week 2018 such as
exhibitions from ports and shipping companies as well as lucky draws and golf
tournaments. Meanwhile, several other events held in parallel with the World
Maritime Week 2018 were the 26th Port State Control Seminar in Langkawi,
World Maritime Bowling at Sunway Lagoon, World Light House Open Day in
Segenting, Batu Pahat, Johor and World Maritime Run in Putrajaya.
