SUMMARY OF MINISTRIES The third visit to Japan from 5 to 7 November 2018 was historic as the Prime
Minister was invited to receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia
Flowers by the Japanese Emperor Akihito. It was awarded in recognition of Tun
Dr. Mahathir’s outstanding service and contribution in fostering bilateral relations
with Japan and in assisting the development in the region. The Prime Minister and
wife were also greeted by the Japanese Emperor and Empress at a special lunch
at Tokyo's Imperial Palace.
Leveraging on the visit, the Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He also delivered a speech at JAMECA-MAJECA
36th Joint Conference (Japan-Malaysia and Malaysia-Japan Economic
Association) and held meetings with leading Japanese companies. He also
received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from University of Tskuba and delivered
a keynote address at Toyo University.
The Prime Minister's visit to Japan has led to the strengthening of bilateral
relations between Malaysia and Japan. Both countries have agreed to enhance
cooperation in economics, investment and finance. The Japanese government
has also agreed to enhance cooperation in education through the establishment
of a Japanese university campus in Malaysia. At the same time, Japanese
investors pledged a commitment to increase their investments in Malaysia and
make Malaysia their business hub in the region.
Throughout these visits, the Prime Minister stressed on the need for Malaysia to
learn and adopt a good work culture as well as the ethics practised by the
Japanese. Thus, the focus of the new Look East Policy will not only emphasise on
