aysia Food Bank Programme 7 | SUMMARY OF MINISTRIES
The Malaysia Food Bank Programme was launched on 22 December 2018 at
Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang in Penang. It is an initiative of the people to
ease the burden of the rising living costs and as an effort to reduce food waste in
Malaysia. The programme is in line with Malaysia's commitment at the
international level under Target 12.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), which calls on all nations to halve food waste and reduce food loss by
2030.
Under the Malaysia Food Bank Programme, supermarkets will identify the
remaining reusable food items to be put aside for NGOs such as Mutiara Food
Bank, Kechara Soup Kitchen and Food Aid Foundation. The excess will then be
collected, cleaned, stored and distributed by NGOs to those in need.
Currently, there are 12 supermarkets that are actively involved in the trial run such
as Tesco (Stores) Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Giant),
Aeon Co. (M) Bhd., Aeon Big (M) Sdn. Bhd., Econsave Cash & Carry Sdn. Bhd.,
NSK Trade City Sdn. Bhd., TF Value-Mart Sdn., My Hero Hypermarket Sdn. Bhd.
and Family Store Sdn. Bhd. As at 15 November 2018, the programme has
successfully saved 945 metric tonnes of surplus food and channeled the donation
to 26,200 households.
In addition to collecting on-ground data obtained from volunteers, the Ministry also
obtained basic data from government agencies. This data was obtained from
initiatives taken to involve the Social Welfare Department and the ICU, JPM to get
more data on the underprivileged groups nationwide. However, it is not confined
to these two agencies alone whereby Village Development Committee (JKKK),
charity centres, resident representatives, religious centres and others can also
engage directly. The Ministry is thus using this opportunity to gain more
information given to these agencies to refine the amount of donations that can be
made through the Malaysia Food Bank Programme.
